Join accomplished painter Cordell for his one-day Portraits in Oils workshop or his one-day Landscapes in Oils workshop - both suitable for painters of all levels but especially beneficial for students who've painted before using other media.
Beginners Oil Painting - Landscapes with Cordell Garfield
Cordell Garfield’s workshop is an ideal introduction to landscape painting in oils. Working from a reference photo provided a landscape painting will be produced with attention to perspective, tonal values, colour mixing and application of colours. Students will be able to create a realistic landscape painting following a step-by-step process. The process will cover:
- Using oil paints
- Measuring and mapping out key features from the photograph with reference to perspective
- The importance of tonal value, hue and chroma in creating landscapes
- Organisation of a colour palette and approach to painting
Cordell will provide painting demonstrations during the day, and supporting handouts as part of the workshop to explain the techniques and approach involved. Suitable for beginners and improvers, you will create a landscape painting that you will be able to take away with you at the end of the workshop.
Beginners Oil Painting - Portraits with Cordell Garfield
With demonstrations and examples at each key stage Cordell will guide you through the process of creating a portrait from source materials provided, culminating in a painting you're sure to be proud of.
From preparing your canvas, mixing oil paints and creating a palette of colours to work with, the secrets of creating a lifelike image from photographs, this workshop covers all the essentials you'll need to continue to practice at home after the class.
These workshops are equally suitable if you haven't painted portraits before.

- Paints and palettes provided
- Small class sizes - maximum 6 students
- Widely spaced workspaces; aprons provided
- Refreshments during the session including herbal teas, decaffeinated drinks & gluten-free biscuits and lunch from the Bell Cafe
- These one-day workshops cost £150 inc VAT per person
- Wokshops run from 10am to 4pm with a break for lunch at appprox 12.30pm
You are asked to bring:
- Your own oil paint brushes if you have them
- Rags for cleaning
- Old clothes
- A flat tray (like a fruit box) to convey your work home plus old newspapers
These courses are taught by by Cordell Garfield, a highly respected and widely-collected painter.
With a friendly and non-intimidating teaching style, Cordell aims to bring out the best in all students regardless of their level of experience.
