Introduction to Art for Beginners - Painting & Drawing with
Emily Brady 6 week course - Tuesday Evenings
A course for people who have never painted or drawn but have always wanted to try!
Making art is a skill that anyone can learn with practice, mostly rooted in skills of observation. In this six week course we will look at many aspects of art, including still life, figure drawing, and landscapes.
We will also try different media such a pencils, paints and charcoal. If you have wanted to join a course but felt intimidated, then this is a great place to start and will give you skills that you can then use to access all kinds of further art courses or develop at home.
The 6 week course structure:
Session 1 - Introduction to using pencil and mark making.
In this first session we will look at the absolute basics: How to use pencils effectively, and how to sketch an object you can see quickly and accurately.
Session 2 - Simple Still Life (charcoal and chalk)
Looking at how objects relate to each other when we draw them, look at light and shade in our work, and experiment with using charcoal.
Session 3 - Getting Painty with Colour theory!
Mixing colours effectively; what colours should you use straight out of the bottle? What should you mix to get the most vibrant blends? We will also be using Acrylic paints.
Session 4 - Creating a simple landscape.
Looking at composition and perspective to help us put together a 3D landscape. We'll discuss different shapes you can use to make your picture visually interesting, then use watercolour paint to create a snowy scene.
Session 5 - Drawing people and portraits
Drawing people! We'll all have a turn at being models for each other if you're feeling brave. We'll look at proportions of the human figure and face and then try to make a self portrait. This session we'll be using pencils again.
Session 6 - Drawing with ink
Working with lines you can't rub out, and talking about the importance of being confident about where you put your mark on the page.
Student Materials: Please bring a sketchbook at least A4 in size, pencils B-6B, an eraser and a sharpener. All other materials are provided.
