Cathy Timbrell - Enamelled Copper Bowls

Cathy says:

"I began life as a teacher and research scientist and passionately believe that the scientific process and artistic creativity are excellent companions, as both activities use many of the same skills. In 2008 I had the opportunity to stop full time work to build and set up a workshop.

I decided to acquire the expertise needed for vitreous enamelling and for number of years worked on silver jewellery pieces that incorporated vibrant enamels as well as stones and gold.
Then 3 years ago I was introduced to the magic and alchemy of high firing enamels onto copper bowls and dishes.
High fired enamel on copper results in unexpected effects through the interaction of the enamels with each other, as well, and often more importantly, with the copper itself.

The enamels (essentially ground glass) are sifted in thin layers onto the copper surface and held in place by a misting of glue. The bowls are fired at 950 deg. C directly in a kiln for a minute or so.  Where the copper is left bare it oxidises and goes black.
This can be covered with opaque enamels, which will often interact with the copper oxide or it can be cleared using an acid bath.
Subsequent layers of enamel can build up most unexpected colours and flow into and over each other.
Firing times, temperature, the shape of the bowl and the mixing of the enamels results in an infinite variety of effects.
These effects can be changed by borrowing techniques from ceramicists such as sgraffito work and raku.

Most of my bowls will go through 10-12 firings before they are finished off by exposing the copper on the rims and bases then numbering and initialling them."

We say:

Each of Cathy's pieces is unique; there's a jewel-like gloss to all the surfaces, which should come as no suprise - enamel is molten glass, and Cathy is a jeweller as well as enamel craftsperson!
