Glass and Techniques

Although it's fashionable to use very costly hand-made glass, some beautiful effects can be achieved using machine-made or hand-finished glass, at a much lower cost for a finished piece.

Among the types of glass we use, you'll find Spectrum waterglass for vibrant saturated colours, Kokomo cathedral glass for texture and richness, often with seeds, Spectrum baroque glass (like the blue streaked glass on the right), Kokomo iridescent glass (which has an oily shine which changes with the light) and fantastic streaky glass from Uruboros.
Even brown glass - especially 'tobacco' flavours - can add depth and colour to pieces in the right combinations.
And for real brightness and fire, hang a piece with hot colours like the oranges and reds in a sunlit window and it will bathe a room with colour on a bright day.

We use the Tiffany method primarily, with copper foil and solder, because it results in a piece with finer lines between adjacent pieces of glass. For our domestically sized pieces, this gives a lighter and finer appearance than traditional leading gives.
Click here for more on the stages of making a piece.

The pieces of glass are cut with a traditional glass cutter (itself something of an art as glass likes to do its own thing when being scored) and ground before being assembled. The pieces of glass are wrapped in copperfoil, which is then soldered into the final piece. We polish the solder, or apply a chemical patina to give a copper or lead-black look.

Some of our favourite pieces with rich and exotic glass include:
Blue Balloons - with blue baroque glass
Orange Bubbles - with striking orange, red and peach glass
Dove at Sunrise - with opalescent, warm yellow, iridescent clear and baroque blue glass - something for everyone!
