Stained Glass One-Day Classes
"Your passion for the subject really shone through and your professionalism in guiding us in all the task was amazing." - Annette
If you've done some foiling stained glass work before and want to discover leading, or if you'd like to make a piece for your garden, join us for this one-day class - suitable for beginners and those with some experience.
The objective of the day is to make a practical piece that will give you a grounding in leading - and something to enjoy in your garden.
We provide designs for you to work on, a selection of glass, and the metal frame for your garden panel - painted and ready to accommodate your finished leaded panel.
One-day leading garden panel beginners class for up to 5 people
As with our one-day beginners class, we'll introduce you to all the key techniques and tools used in the traditiional method of constructing stained glass using lead cames.
As this class demands some strength in hands and wrists, we recommend the foiling beginners class to those with limited strength or control.
We start out by demonstrating how we score and break glass, and explain the methods of constructing a panel using the leading method. At each stage we'll discuss the tools and techniques being used and point out common difficulties.
- Scoring and breaking glass with a variety of curves and shapes
- Preparing the glass for leading using the grinder
- Stretching, forming and cutting lead cames
- Building up with cames and purpose-made layout boards
- Soldering using a pro-quality soldering iron
- Cementing the panel
- Final assembly on to the metal frame
You'll then work on a mini project to practice the key skills before selecting a panel design to work on.
Class attendees with some leading stained glass experience can opt to take a short glass cutting refresher before starting. They may then move straight to working on their garden panel.
We break for lunch shortly after midday, and you'll then have the whole afternoon to work on your garden panel. With 2 tutors and a maximum of 5 students you'll receive as much guidance as you need.
The course cost includes:
- All materials, garden panel metalwork and glass
- Use of tools and protective gear
- Lunch and refreshments during the day
- 2 tutors, maximum class size 5 people
- Info pack to keep with information on where to buy glass and tools, plus reminders on techniques including introduction to leading
- Your piece to take home and guidance on final cleaning (done after the class)
