Intermediate / improvers class
"Your passion for the subject really shone through and your professionalism in guiding us in all the task was amazing." -Annette, class attendee
If you've done some stained glass work before and want a refresher, or to update your skills, join us for this one-day class to develop your abilities and boost your confidence.
The one-day intermediate / improvers class for 4 people
The objective of the day is to make a project piece that will challenge you and help you achieve a good finish.
We provide designs for you to choose from, or you're welcome to bring a design of your own to work on.
We start out with a refresher on accurate glass cutting and foiling
- Scoring and breaking glass with a variety of curves and shapes, focusing on accuracy and efficient glass usage
- Preparing the glass for soldering using the grinder, emphasising the techniques required to achieve a good finish
- Soldering using a pro-quality soldering iron, working on getting consistent lines and a smooth 'bead'
After a tea break, you'll select your project design and the glass you'll use. If you opt to work on your own design, we'll work with you to identify any areas that need adapting for glass.
We'll also help you plan your work to make best use of the glass - essential for your ongoing career!
You'll then have at least 5 hours to work on your project with our supervision and as much help as you need!
Leading method - basic introduction
Before the class concludes we'll teach you the basics of leading to finish off your piece, giving you a grounding in this important technique, introducing the specialist tools and materials used by the pros.
Advanced tools
If time allows during the class you'll get the chance to try two useful tools that will enable you to develop and refine your work:
- Diegel foiling machine - speeds up the time-consuming foiling process and helps to achieve greater accuracy
- Glastar circle cutter - allows the cutting of circles in glass far more accurately and quickly than by hand
The course cost includes:
- All materials, choice of project designs and glass
- Use of tools and protective gear
- Lunch and refreshments during the day
- 2 tutors, maximum class size 4 people
- Info pack to keep with information on where to buy glass and tools, plus reminders on techniques including introduction to leading
- Copies of the class designs provided to work on at home
- Your pieces to take home
